Here you will find lots of different informtion about our class reading program. I will keep you up to date on what is happening in our classroom. Also, we will use this page to add links to various other sites that will be of value to our students.
Reader's Workshop
One of the programs we will use in Reading Class this year is called, Reader's Workshop. I have used this for quite a few years now, and the children really seem to respond well to it. It works like this... first the students have to pick a "Chapter Book" on THEIR READING LELVEL! This is the most important part of the program. We cannot pick books way above where our students are reading and think with practice, "they will figure it out". Reading does not work in this way. The students have to read a book on their level or they WILL get frustrated, and this is when they could actually get turned off to reading. So, it is very important to make sure the students are reading a book on their level. After they are finished reading this book, they will complete the second step of the process, and that is to write a summary about their book. The third step is to complete a "Graphic Organizer". I gave each student a "Reader's Workshop Notebook". It contains about 30 different G.O's. They will complete one for each chapter book they read. The fourth part of the program is to pick a "Final Project" to do for the book. I have a list in the back of the notebook with about 60 different projects to choose from. Once they have done that project, they may not do that one for the rest of the year. The last part of the project is to present their final project to the class. They must complete one entire Reader's workshop projecct each grading period . (9 weeks)
